Genetic ancestry tests imperfect say researchers

More than 40 companies, including 23andMe Inc in Mountain View, California, in which Google has invested, and privately held Pathway Genomics Corp in San Diego, sell the tests to consumers.
They are not intended to provide insight into health information. Instead, the tests give a rough estimation of a person's genetic ancestry.
But the growing popularity of the tests, which are not regulated, has raised some concerns among genetic experts who fear consumers are not fully aware of their limitations.
"A major issue regarding commercial ancestry testing is that there is no quality assurance guarantee," according to a report led by researchers at Duke University on behalf of the American Society of Human Genetics and published in The American Journal of Human Genetics.
Joann Boughman, executive vice president of the American Society of Human Genetics, said genetic ancestry testing is very useful for understanding genetic differences in things like blood type or genetic diseases in large populations of people.
But they are less useful for individuals.
"If you swabbed your cheek and sent your DNA off to find out what your ancestral origins are, you would get a result back saying you are 5 percent African, 12 percent European and 70 percent Asian, or something like that," Boughman said.
"The question we want people to think about is, what does that mean? Why would I want that information?"
The group is concerned that consumers who get the test results might read too much into them.
"Sometimes there are social and political and even economic implications," Boughman said in a telephone interview. "In some states in the country, you have to prove you are a member of a specific Indian tribe to have access to either land or earnings from investments even in casinos.
"One of the ways you would supposedly be able to prove or disprove you were from that tribe is through this genetic ancestry testing," she said.
A negative result could mean that those genes had been lost in an individual's line because parents only pass along half of their genes to their children, she said.
Spokesmen for Pathway and 23andMe Inc could not be immediately reached for comment.
Boughman said genetic ancestry testing is different from direct-to-consumer genetic tests for health information, but the group has concerns about those too.
Walgreen Co this week planned to distribute genetic health tests from Pathway Genomics in its stores, but put those plans on hold after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expressed concerns that the tests were not approved by the agency.Pilipaca

Celtics send Cavaliers and LeBron James? packing

It wasn't just the East draw that trembled Thursday night, but the entire NBA balance of power as the so-recently mighty Cleveland Cavaliers fell to Earth in the last game on LeBron James' contract.
In a crowning indignity at a particularly bad time, with James about to decide his future, the Cavaliers fell Thursday night, 94-85, to the aging Boston Celtics, who captured the series they started as heavy underdogs, 4-2.
The Celtics, who staggered down the stretch, falling to No. 4 and into the Cavaliers' bracket, which seemed like a bad idea at the time, advance to the Eastern Conference finals against Orlando.
The Cavaliers advance to the off-season with a newly enhanced possibility of losing James as a free agent.
With the crowd chanting "New York Knicks!", James went out looking like the imitation of himself he'd been since his left-handed free throw at the end of the Chicago series revealed he had a sore right elbow.
"I'm not using the elbow for an excuse," said James. "It limited me some. You hope to be 100 percent going into the series but at this point of the season, I don't know anybody who's 100 percent."
Actually, James looked closer to 50 percent, given a major part of his game, driving the ball to the basked right-handed, was missing.
Being LeBron, he was still capable of getting a triple-double on a difficult night Thursday, with 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists.
However, he didn't put his stamp on the game, as he always had but did only once in this series, in Game 3, and never looked like his old runaway train self.
He often played more like a point guard than the game's ultimate weapon, and often dropped out of the offense, altogether.
Thursday he took only 21 shots, missed 13 and turned the ball over nine times, putting him one from a farewell quadruple-double.
The Cavaliers reeled into town off their Game 5 debacle, in which they lost by 32 points with James shooting three for 14 in their own Quicken Loans Arena, known locally as "The Q" or not, as Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Bill Livingston called it, "The Quit."
With owner Dan Gilbert noting the effort wasn't "anywhere near the high expectations all of us have," the Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst compiled a list of endangered Cavaliers that read like the team directory: General Manager Danny Ferry, Coach Mike Brown, Shaquille O'Neal.
Between games, James was his light-hearted self, joking with teammates in a shooting contest, "I got a handicap sticker on."
Of course, he continued to insist to the media that nothing was wrong, even while noting matter-of-factly his elbow was still bothering him.
"You always have certain injuries you hope they don't flare up during the course of the game," he said before Game 6. "But I always feel pretty good before the game.
"With the elbow, it's just a matter of going out and seeing how it feels that day."
It didn't look like it felt that good Thursday either. The Cavaliers trailed, 51-49, at the half after twice coming back from double-digit deficits, because Mo Williams put on a LeBron-esque show, scoring 20 points.
Williams finished with 22. Without James putting them on those broad shoulders, as he has for the seven seasons that led up to the start of this series, the Cavaliers were over their heads.
"I geared myself for the postseason," said James, declining to speculate on his intentions. "The fact that it's over right now is definitely a surprise to myself but it is what it is.
"A friend of mine told me, 'I guess you have to go through a lot of nightmares before you finally accomplish your dreams.'
"And that's what's going on for me as an individual right now."Responsibilities

When is a Man Old?

"I dread to come to the end of the year, said a friend to me recently, "it makes me realize I am growing old.”
William James, the great psychologist, said that most men are "old fogies at twenty-five",He was right. Most men at twenty-five are satisfied with their jobs. They have accumulated the little stock of prejudices that they call their "Principles, " and closed their minds to all new ideas; they have ceased to grow.
The minutea man ceases to grow-no matter what his years-that minute he begins to be old. On the other hand, the really great man never grows old.
Goethe passed out at eighty-three, and finished his Faust only a few years earlier; Gladstone took up a new language when he was seventy. Laplace, the astronomer, was still at work when death caught up with him at seventy-eight. He died crying, "What we know is nothing; what we do not know is immense."
And there you have the real answer to the question, "When is a man old?"
Laplace at seventy-eight died young. He was still unsatisfied, still sure that he had a lot to learn.

information science domain

As a brand-new development direction of information science domain, Wireless sensor networks(WSN) has caused widespread attention of the academic circles and the industry due to the great promise and the potential with the various applications. WSN consists of a large number of sensor nodes which integrate sensor, the unit for data processing and the module for the short distance wireless communication. The networks is a kind of wireless ad hoc networks with a distinct data-centric property, and the objective of sensor networks is to sense, collect and process the information of the various environments or the detected objects in the coverage area of the networks, and then send the sensing information to the user. At present, WSN has been utilied for the health care, military defense, anti-terrorist,disaster prevention and other commercial area.Along with the the development of wireless sensor network, the network coverage already became the hot spot of the WSN research. it’s of great importance to improve the network performance through enhancing the coverage rate with which the connection is guaranteed in the target area. There are some coverage algorithms in recent coverage rate research works, however these works are based on the unrealistic assumption of perfect coverage.

Let us take a moment of the time just to pay tribute and show appreciation to the person called mom though some may not say it openly to their mother. There's no substitute for her. Cherish every single moment. Though at times she may not be the best of friends, may not agree to our thoughts, she is still your mother!!!She will be there for you...to listen to your woes, your braggings, your frustations, etc. Ask yourself...have you put aside enough time for her, to listen to her "blues" of working in the kitchen, her tiredness? Be tactful, loving and still show her due respect though you may have a different view from hers. Once gone, only fond memories of the past and also regrets will be left.

Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Love her more than you love yourself. Life is meaningless without her ...

The only way to travel is on foot)

The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists. Descriptions like ‘ Palaeolithic Man’, ‘Neolithic Man’, etc., neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label ‘Legless Man’. Histories of the time will go something like this: ‘in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts and escalators in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. This situation was forced upon earth dwellers of that time because of miles each day. But the surprising thing is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were marred by the presence of large car parks. ’

The future history books might also record that we were deprived of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world – or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train a blurred image of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers, in particular, are forever obsessed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. Is it the lure of the great motorways, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: ‘I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.’ The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says ‘I’ve been there. ’ You mention the remotest, most evocative place-names in the world like El Dorado, Kabul, Irkutsk and someone is bound to say ‘I’ve been there’ – meaning, ‘I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else. ’

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience; the present ceases to be a reality: you might just as well be dead. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness. He knows that sound. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travellers.

We Never Told Him He Couldn't Do It

My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally - but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn't know he had a problem when you saw him walk .

The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn't know.

In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others - perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know.

He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day - even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. "Okay," he said. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn't run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn't know.

Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade - the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it. We never told him he couldn't do it...so he didn't know. He just did it.

Lets Sharpen the Silence...! ! !

Maintain silence
Listen to the breeze
For all it says
is to wipe the grease....

Maintain silence
Listen to its yell
That why as rabbits
do we all dwell...

It howls again
out of disdain
And asks us to rub
the darkest stains....

Let's sharpen the silence
And come out hard
To show the devil
that we won't retard...
